WRONG SPELING

I`ve been keeping myself updated with the news through the internet for as much as I can. These days kasi, I’m on the grave yard shift (7pm-7am, I know right?). Meaning, I don’t have time to watch the prime time news.

Yesterday, I was browsing a certain showbiz-oriented website when suddenly a headline catches my attention: “Philippines win Miss Teen Universe 2012 First Runner Up”. Lovely, I thought. Because I haven’t heard the pageant before, I did some research. Okay, it’s a new one. With 13 candidates. Held in Nicaragua. I also did some research on Miss Philippines Clarisse Obia

I had a fantastic run until I saw this -

PHILIPPNES. Ano ‘to, lokohan?!

Miss Philippines must be such a sweet and nice girl not to complain that the name of her country was misspelled. Or she did complain nicely but the organizers took 123456789 years to print the correctly-spelled sash.

This is not the first time that a Miss Philippines wore a misspelled sash. Remember Miss Philippines in Miss Universe 2008? That’s the epic-est fail of all times. To think that it’s Miss Universe. Like, hello?

So, let me ask you my dear readers, if you are representing the country in an international event like this would you still wear the sash even if it is misspelled?

Would you or would you not?

How To Win A Pageant Even If You’re Not (That) Good-looking

Well, it’s PNSA Ambassador and Ambassadress of Goodwill season again!

Honestly, it’s one of the few events that I look forward to when I was still in college. Because, hell, why not? It’s the only time of the year when eye candies from different nursing schools in the region strut their stuffs on stage and vie for the bragging right of being, well, PNSA’s most gorgeous.

It must be nerve-wracking to some of the candidates. I remembered joining a department-wide pageant a year ago. Oh God, it was a very exhausting and pressure-filled experience. I remember being too psyched about it, mainly because that was my first (and last) pageant evaaar and that pageant thing was for ego-boosting purposes and bragging right that I joined and won a pageant.

Jubs, you’ll represent the team sa Nightingale”, our team leader told me. With no second thoughts, I nodded. I literally had no idea what I was going into. Bahala na, I said to myself. I was in my senior year and I just wanted to have fun. That night, I told my mom about it. At first, she disapproved. “Gastos lang yan”, she said. But in the end, I still had her blessing (and her financial assistance).

As the days for the pageant became near, I got busier and busier. I remembered waking up at the middle of the night just to practice my walk in front of this huge, huge mirror in the dormitory’s men’s room. I shopped for new clothes with my mom. I remembered spending a large portion of my weekly allowance to buy stuffs – paints, ribbons, masks blah blah. Went to rehearsal. To tell you guys, it wasn’t easy. That’s why it made me venerate guys who constantly join in this kind of events. Applause applause!

At this point, I want to thank my family for being so supportive. My mom and my two sisters showed up in the day of the pageant, brought me some snacks and dinner and was ready to cheer for me.

Hours before the pageant proper, it sunk in to me. The thought. The anxiety. I may not show outward signs of beingfor new clothes with my mom. I nervous but deep inside my vital organs were coiling. I was conscious of how, at any given moment, I might throw up. All those I thought were preparations suddenly seemed not enough. All that self-assurance suddenly went down.

Before I could realize what happened next, I was on the backstage waiting for my number to be called.

The host: “Candidate No. 5 Jubert John Marzan.” Not much of a choice. Fight or flight. When I went on stage, I saw the crowd cheering for me (but I heard someone boo-ed me, bad!). I felt so much loved. I thought: “Let’s do this! I’m actually having fun.”

After hundreds of costume changes, the preliminary Q&A was next. Everybody got a question. It was asked in English. So easy, I thought (to tell you, I didn’t really prepare for the Q&A that much). The judge asked me (I’m paraphrasing): “how would you promote breast-feeding to mothers?”. Honestly, I fumbled for an answer but managed to give one in the end. ‘Wag niyo ng itanong. Nakakahiya! At saka nakalimutan ko na. Hahaha. At this point on, I wasn’t expecting anything. I knew that my answer in the Q&A messed up my scores. My answer, I believe, wasn’t that bad but it wasn’t good either.

WORD VOMMMMIT!

Then, the announcement of the Top 5 came next. I knew then and there that I won’t place. But guess what? The unexpected happened.

The host: “The last spot goes to… contestant no. 5, Jubert John Marzan!” Yaaaaay! That’s me. I didn’t saw that coming.

To make the story shorter, I made it into the Top 5 and managed to give a decent answer in the final Q&A. I didn’t win the title. I only ended up as 2nd runner up but it felt good. My family was happy. Our team was happy. I was so proud of myself. The experience taught me that “it’s not all always about winning”.

Probably the lesson of the story is that, in a competition like this one, being smart and good-looking doesn’t guarantee you of winning. What you need is the determination of a winner. The drive. The desire. The confidence. Believe in yourself first so that you can make everyone believe in you. Though it is a popular answer among beauty queens, that doesn’t make it any less crucial.

Looking back at joining the pageant, I realized that back then I made decisions on my own.My family initially discouraged my plans of joining but in the end I joined and eventually got their support. Why? Because of a simple reason: I wanted to be there. I felt that it would make me happy. I joined not because my friends pressured me to do so but because I wanted to.

TO THE CANDIDATES: Do your best but don’t be too hard on yourself. Be competitive but at the same time have fun. Don’t be intimidated with the bashers/haters/bitters (inggit lang sila!) and your fellow contestants, instead learn from them to do better.

Shameless plug-in. As for me, I’m rooting for Iana babes – my girl on this auspicious event.Don’t vamp a reason that because she’s my friend. She’s really nice. If you’re looking for a knock-dead gorgeous, it’s her – hands down. Whoever is reading this that has a Facebook account please visit the official page now, support Iana and drop some comments. No, there’s no prize for nasty comments so just zip it.

1. Like the pageant’s official page here (PNSA Ambassador and Ambassadress of Goodwill 2012).

2. Then like Iana’s picture. Please please please. She’s pretty, isn’t she? (Iana’s glamshot)

Thank you.

How my Patricia Lost A Crown

I was happy to know that Shamcey made it and she definitely deserved the title. She's the best of them all last night! She was a diva and a motivational speaker. The moment she finished answering, I know she will be the one. Next stop: Sao Paolo, baby!

Patricia, my dear Tricia, made it to the semis - which was a good run. She was superb in swimsuit and evening gown but...

Oh yes, her final answer:

What advice can you give to a teenage? She said "Just be yourself. In this world, we tend to be someone who we are not" blah blah blah.

It was good but not quite. I was thinking of a 4th runner-up finish for her (if there's any) based from her answer.

I was quite disappointed that she didn't make it as a finalist but getting herself together and moving forward after Miss Philippines - Earth is a brave feat. I'm done with the should-haves and could-haves and just salute her. With or without a crown, she will always be my queen.

Anyways, I fell in love with Janine's answer. Her answer "men must love unconditionally"made a mark in every man's heart (read: tinamaan). She deserved a crown.

I don't question the panel's choice for the Top 5 but with the way I see it the result must be (based from their answers and the way they delivered it):

Bb. Pilipinas - Universe: Shamcey Supsup

Bb. Pilipinas - International: Janine Togunon

Bb. Pilipinas - Tourism: Dianne Necio

1st Runner-up: Diana Arevalo

2nd Runner-up: Isabella Manjon

From the choices I posted yesterday, I got 11 out of the fifteen semifinalists or 73% which I think is good. And all the girls in the Top 5 are in my list. Oh. I'm all smiles.

The Battle of the Eye Candies

(DISCLAIMER: I've never seen the girls personally. These are just based from the plenty of photos and videos available through the net)

I have just completed the first and final list of my Bb. Pilipinas 2011 bets. That's sorting 40 of them and it wasn't a joke. It is not easy choosing fifteen girls without the smallest hint of bias. Of course, I have my favorites but some girls whom I ignored in the past has penetrated most of the slots. I've made several erasures but oh well, here it is:

Bb. Pilipinas-Universe: The moment I saw Patricia Tumulak months ago, I'm pretty sure she would be in the finals. Call it a fan's instinct. Oh, she's so pretty. It's always a delight to see her in the television. Tricia shoots it in the bag this year!

Bb. Pilipinas-International: Bb. Pilipinas almost always pick a girl who is fresh. Well, it's Shamcey Supsup for me. If my Tricia babes fails to snatch the main crown, she's the best alternate.

The Runners-up:

With a body bootylicious and an enormous sex appeal, MJ Lastimosa can win it all but I prefer Tricia and Shamcey over her. And you know why.

Almost everything is perfect for Diana Arevalo. If she reaches the Top 15 or whatever, she'll be unstoppable. I'm betty my ass on it.

I don't know where to put Dianne Necio, honestly. I want to put her in a lower ranking but given her 1st runner-up finish last year, she's quite assured of a placement. Oh yes, politics!

Completing the Top 10:

The judges cannot ignore Isabella Manjon. You cannot just ignore a girl with a face like that. And besides, she's Madam Stella's favorite. I was told.

Paula Figueras who I ignored before had become a soft spot. She's stunning. I have a strong feeling that she will surprise us in the finals. If there is a beautiful surprise, it has to be her - pleeeease!

I'm not an expert or whatever but I know beautiful when I see one. Chloe McCully is undoubtedly the face of Bb. Pilipinas 2011.

I don't know to you but I find Queenierich Rehman mean-looking but (yes, there's a but) I think something special is in stored for her. Her name sounds expensive, btw. Nah, I'm just saying.

I see some sparks on Janine Tugonon and she deserves to be in the Top 10. Those who would disagree can lick my balls, huh.

And if there's a Top 15, these girls should be included:

Although Sabrinne Al-Tawil's beauty is not my cup of tea, she's a sure shoo-in in the semis.

There are underdogs that might get upset victories in the final night. Jen-Roe Gubat and Luzelle Felipe are those we need to watch out for. Who knows, they might pull a Gatbonton-kind of win.

Oh Arabella (Hanesh). She's fierceeeesh! The camera (or is it the photographer?) loves her big time.

Krystle Grant is another eye candy that cannot be ignored though I find her quite boring.

Here you go, my personal bets for tonight's 2011 Bb. Pilipinas Coronation Night. Like what I've always said, don’t throw me the “why is she there/not there?” shit. This is my list.

On my final note, I predicted six out of the 10 semifinalists last year. Not bad, not bad for a first timer. Krista and Venus were my top two choices and they both bring home a crown. I also correctly predicted Dianne's 1st runner-up placement.

Beauties and the Best

This is certainly one of the best batch of Binibinis in years. I have a great feeling that the Philippines will emerge once more in the international battle of beauties and brains.

THE BEAUTIES

Czarina Gatbonton. Honestly, I was pissed when this unknown girl was crowned. No, I don't dislike her. It's just that I want another girl for the title. But the Czarina that arrived in China was a different woman altogether. Based on the pictures alone, she is a class above the rest. The other girls look so ordinary when she's a around. She will not be denied of a semifinal spot but she will certainly struggle to win the crown. [follow Czarina's MW journey here]

Anyone calling Czarina "plain jane" can eat my shorts.

Krista Kleiner. A beauty what every Filipino will call beautiful. She's a diva, a scene stealer. She knows how to sell herself onstage. Her obvious waterloo is her body - she needs to tone it down a bit. For now, she has established herself as a front-runner. She might eventually win the crown for the Philippines. [follow Krista's MI journey here]

Psyche Resus. I have a mixed feelings about this girl. She looks so likable and she outshines everyone in the Q&A. But Miss Earth 2010 is full of stunners and she will certainly struggle to be on the semifinals - I have already reserved the crown for Italy. But still, I'll give her the benefit of the doubt.

Who will give us our 8th international crown?

You want a fearless prediction?

None of them. Two of them would place as semifinalists but only one will be a finalist. That's it.

No crown for us this year!

THE BEST

VENUS RAJ. I have no doubt in my mind that Venus will end our 10 year drought in MU. It was very obvious that the organizers wanted her to win. So, the easiest personal question was asked. I was disappointed with her answer, too. But grabbing the 4th RU after ten years of nothingness is a brave feat. Whatta come back for the Philippines! I'm already done with the should-haves and could-haves and just salute her.

1.3.10

It's getting HOT in here! *phew*

It’s betting season again. Bb. Pilipinas this time. This is one of the most heated editions of Bb. Pilipinas in history. I find it very difficult to choose from the 24 candidates because almost half of them has international caliber. C’mon, the candidates are smokin’ hot.

Bb. Pilipinas-Universe 2010 KRISTA KLEINER

I have no doubt that she can be a great representative to Miss Universe. She has this stage presence that can immediately wow the audience. Her body is quite raw like most people complain about but she can carry herself very well. Besides, she has a gift of gab so expect her to outsmart all the girls comes final night.

NOTE: This photo of her made my ‘other’ head scream oh la la.

Bb. Pilipinas-World 2010 MARIA VENUS RAJ

A veteran in pageantry, Venus is another beauty to watch for in the finals. Believe me, she’s nice. She’s a fellow Bicol University student, different campus though. She has a very unique beauty that registers well on photographs and on television. She can just easily snatch a crown and might eventually win an international crown for the country.

Bb. Pilipinas-International 2010 NICOLETTE HENSON

Hands down! She is the face of the competition. I can’t ask for more from this lady. She’s not your typical girl-next-door beauty. She’s stylish and looks very fresh. She will certainly do well in Miss International.

Bb. Pilipinas 2010 1st RU DIANNE NECIO

She’s full of sparks and charm and anyone who would claim otherwise is a liar. Some people liken her to Miriam Quiambao, the sweet aura, the queenly stance and the beautiful Filipina complexion. She can be a big hit at MU as well but her age (she’s only 17) might hinder her from winning the Bb. Pilipinas-Universe crown.

Bb. Pilipinas 2010 2nd RU SELENA ANTONIO

She’s the Sandra Seifert of 2010. She’s one of the prettiest, if not the prettiest face for this year. She has that X-factor and not to mention a hot-as-hell body.

Completing the TOP 10 are

MARY ANN ROSS MISA

TONI ALYESA HIPOLITO

GWEN RUAIS

PATRICIA EJERCITADO

ANNA MARIE MORELOS

There you go, my Bb. Pilipinas 2010 bets. Don’t throw me the “why is she there/not there?” shit. This is my list, remember?
